Message from the Captain

Moan, Moan, Moan
I know it has been a while since I mentioned the 3, sorry 2 R’s. Pitch marks seemed to have been addressed by members but the green staff thought that after the mid-week medal that we had returned to the bad old days. Hopefully this is not the case.

As I have said before, the course is the best it has been since I became a member here, let us try to help the green staff by taking responsibility for our actions.

It has been suggested that each group that goes out selects one player to act as a warden and if he/she sees a member of that group not repairing pitch marks or replacing divots or not following course etiquette in any way, they should inform the guilty party the error of their ways.

We are responsible people so can we get back on track and keep the course at its best.

Moan over, sunglasses on, tally ho !

Steve Belchamber.
PS Charity bunker is up and running, just in case it slips your mind. The draw and format for the Whitby trip is now on the Captains notice board.

Message From The Captain

Monday Moan
I am moaning as I have nothing to moan about!

Had a great couple of days with the re structured Captains Weekend. I have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support of members in playing on the days, participating in the raffle and donating prizes.

I am extremely grateful for all donations from members and non members alike to the raffle which raised almost £700 for my chosen charity, the Premature Baby Unit at Sunderland Hospital.

If I have not thanked anyone personally for their donations yet, can I offer my apologies now and offer my sincere thanks.

Saturdays format was a test of golfing skills, comprehension and mathematics. There were some A star candidates but one or two re-sits especially in the last two areas!!

I must also thank everyone who have helped behind the scenes in the preparation and organisation of the two days, Chris for his running about and purchasing, Linda for her sterling work in the kitchen, Kath and Vicky on the busy bar and Rob and Karen for the help during the whole build up and especially on the Halfway House on Saturday.

I hope everyone enjoyed the days as much as I did, finally a massive thanks again to all.

Captain's Weekend Friday 31st July & Saturday 1st August 2020

Captain's Shortened Weekend

Ladies & Gents, obviously the weekend plans have been affected by the current situation but I will be having Friday and Saturday Competitions in a slightly shorter than normal Captain's Weekend

Fridays competitions are for the 5 day and over 55 members. Play will be from the yellow tees for the men and it is a singles Stableford competition with full handicap allowance.

Saturdays competition is a little more complicated, it is a Patsome Strokeplay pairs competition, played from the white tees for men.

Can all players PLEASE make themselves familiar with the rules and scoring system for this as it is something I cant ever recall having been played here. The rules and scoring method will be attached to the cards in the pro shop.

Can you ensure that the cards are filled in and the scores entered via the computer correctly, it would be awful if I had to ask for prizes back due to scoring errors.

Finally I would like to thank members for their kind donations towards the prizes and the Charity Raffle, this is very much appreciated. Thanks are also to staff and other members for the help I have received so far in the organisation.

All that remains is to wish you all a great weekend and will see you at some time during the course of events.
Not even got time for a Friday moan, but there is always Monday I guess. ????

Pitch Marks & Divots

Repairs to Fairways & Greens

Could I please rely on the member’s good nature to repair divots if they see them and please repair at least three pitch marks.

I played 18 holes yesterday and I seemed to have spent most of the time along with my playing partners repairing divots and pitch marks.

I know some of these may be down to visitors as well as some of the members but please could you help and repair them if you see them.

Thank you kindly for your cooperation.

Message from the Chairman

RE NORMAN WAKE MEMORIAL PLATE

Following his death in September 2019 we were made aware that Norman Wake, a long standing member of Wearside Golf Club had kindly decided to leave, in his will, a substantial sum of money to the Club.

After a number of months of legal involvement we have been informed that the figure is in the region of £100,000. At this point I would like to express our thanks to Mel Ward who was Norman’s Executor and good friend. He did a huge amount of work sorting out the complex financial ramifications.

This has allowed the Club to be more comfortable in purchasing two expensive grass cutting machines. It also allowed the Club to extend the subscription year from 12 to 15 months thus all members have benefited from Norman’s amazing gesture. Obviously, this also helps the Club cope with the vast reduction in income as a result of the Covid 19 restrictions.

In keeping with his wishes we have already played an extra club competition in his name and for next year the Club will have purchased “The Norman Wake Memorial Plate”.

Marj Fletcher
Chairman

Middleton Cup

Amendment to Start Sheet

The Middleton cup is a Foursome bogey competition and when you sign in on the day you will be asked to create your two man team. However, an error has been made in the booking sheet, which is allowing single golfers to book. Unfortunately this can't be corrected now that bookings are made. Therefore, if you are down as a single golfer for the Middleton Cup 2ng August please make up a team with a fellow single golfer before the event. Otherwise you could be disappointed on the day, sorry for the inconvenience.

Message From The Secretary

Good Afternoon,

Please take your rubbish home with you and if you use a buggy please do not leave any rubbish in them.

Thank you for your cooperation and have a good weekend.

Message from the Captain

Let me start with a riddle.

If I walk onto the green and repair 2 pitch marks and my playing partners do the same plus everyone I speak to says they do too, then who the ??????????? is making all the other pitch marks?

Danny and the greenstaff have got this course in the best condition I have seen it while I have been a member here. This is reflected in some outstanding scores in competitions so far, well done to those players and they are rewarded with new handicaps as well as the accolades that accompany victory.

So I find it strange why all members are not looking after our best asset. Obviously many members will say I am preaching to the converted and hopefully they will echo my views.

Finally a short quiz
Is it ok to take buggies or trolleys onto tee boxes or between bunkers and greens?
Is it ok to take practice swings on the first tee area?
Is it ok to leave the bunker and walk straight onto the green without trying to remove the sand from you shoes first?
Can you wear a golf cap in the Clubhouse?

Clue: It’s the same answer to all of the above.

Yes I know this is all a bit cheeky and sarcastic possibly, but ask yourselves this. Am I right?
Monday moan over.

Steve Belchamber

Message from Captain

Apologies for the mass email but as the intended recipient is as yet unknown I have no other option.
My usual Friday rant was not needed last week but unfortunately, a Monday one is. Sunday was an extremely difficult day for golf as you were no doubt aware. Conditions for the second round of the Handicap Bowl were testing to say the least. As this is one of the main Club competitions the only players on the course were obviously members I was amazed and disappointed that someone would decide that it was appropriate to clean their golf shoes in the upstairs gent toilet sink!!
The place was left an absolute mess and its unfair that staff had to clean this up after an act of pure selfishness by a member of the Club. These facilities are not to be used for cleaning golf shoes.

Club Championship Entries

Club Championship Entries 29th July for players with handicaps of 9 or under. Entry List is now on Captains Board in the gent's locker room.

The draw will be made on Monday the 23rd July

Thank you

K. Farrer

Message from the Captain
Captain's Exchange Day - Saturday 15th August 2020
Gentlemen
This is going ahead on 15th August as planned, however there will be one or two changes due to the current situation.

Unfortunately it would be difficult to provide transport due to distancing rules while travelling. This would make it financially unrealistic I'm afraid.

I'm still looking at a party of about 30 players, members who registered an initial interest will obviously will have preference at this stage.

If you were on this list can you please confirm that you still wish to attend, or, let me know if you no longer wish to go so I can open it up to others.

If this can be done ASAP I would be very grateful as you can appreciate I have to firm up arrangements with Whitby Golf Club.

The work on the kitchen at Whitby will be completed so food will be available, I hope to get a menu so we can pre order to help with any catering arrangements

Thanks

Steve Belchamber
